Applying to your study program is quite a simple process. You don't need to stress about it. Check if you apply directly via the university or through uni-assist, a service that helps with applications for many German universities.
Step 1: Choose Your Programme and University
Shortlist courses that match your academic background and career goals. Double-check if they accept international students and which portal (university or Uni-Assist) handles the application.
Step 2: Check Your Application Route (Direct or Uni-Assist)
Some universities accept direct applications via their official portal. Others use Uni-Assist, a centralised service that pre-checks your documents and forwards them to the university.
- Uni-Assist fee: Approx. €75 for the first university, €30 for each additional one.
- You’ll need to create an account on www.uni-assist.de and upload your academic documents.
Step 3: Apply for a VPD (Preliminary Review Documentation) if Needed
Some universities will ask for a VPD from Uni-Assist before considering your application. It verifies your qualifications for the German system.
Step 4: Gather and Submit Required Documents
Prepare scanned, translated, and certified copies of your:
- Academic transcripts
- APS certificate (for bachelor's/master’s)
- Language test scores (IELTS/TOEFL/TestDaF)
- SOP, LORs, research proposal (if applicable)
- CV and passport copy
Upload them according to the format specified by the portal or university.
Step 5: Mind the Application Deadlines
Missing a deadline can cost you a semester, so mark your calendar carefully.

You’ll need this letter for your student visa application and blocked account process.
